Trouble getting auth with `.auth/user.json` to work

I'm following the docs for API base authentication, however a user.json file is neither created, nor (when manually created) filled with anything after going through the auth.setup.ts file.
If I log the request (and result) it all looks fine, but nothing seems to actually get stored?
